Forward Deployed Engineer: The Hottest Job in Tech?

If you've spent any time around AI career content lately, you've probably seen people calling this the ā€œhottest job in techā€ right now, and one of the best ways into AI if you're just getting started.

I've coached hundreds of people into AI and ML roles, and lately this is the one that keeps coming up. But is it actually the best entry-level job in AI right now? Or is it mostly hype?

Last week’s video breaks it down!

Blog version is here.

How My YouTube Channel Makes Money

I must admit, I’m a little bit nervous to share this, but I wanted to be transparent with you guys.

This video breaks down how my business makes money, and (more importantly) where that money goes. I thought this would be interesting, but also helpful for you all to understand what goes on behind the scenes. <3

Pep talk time.

One thing that can be really challenging when we're learning something difficult is the expectation that our progress will be linear. Basically, we think that if we study an hour a day, we'll keep learning the same amount that we have the previous days, and over time that will grow into useful knowledge.

This is true up to a point, because the thing that most people don't realize is there's often a moment where your knowledge starts to compound in really fundamental and exciting ways.

For example, when you start learning machine learning, at first you really have to grind through each individual theory or new concept. At one point, you start to learn enough that it's easier to build more complex systems more quickly, which allows you to learn new concepts even faster. This in turn enables you to grow into a more experienced engineer at a much quicker rate than it took you to learn the fundamentals.

Or, an example from my life: I've been trying to grow my short-form audience on Instagram for about eight months. For the last several months, it's been really slow going. Just now, in the last two weeks, that rate of growth has started to increase. I'm very confident that if we kept up, at one point that rate of change would just continue to grow until we’ve built a sizable audience.

But none of that would happen if we had given up. If I calculated that I was growing maybe 50 new followers on Instagram per week, and therefore it would take me a thousand weeks to ever get to my goal, I might have stopped. If I had been frustrated with how slow it was to learn the fundamental machine learning concepts at the beginning, I would never have made it to where I am now.

This can be particularly tricky when we're comparing ourselves to others. When I see someone who's much farther along in terms of content creation or their career, it's extremely easy to tell myself, "I'll never catch up. It's going to take me forever at the rate that I'm currently progressing, so I might as well not continue." But that's exactly when you need to put your foot on the gas, not hit the brakes.

So if that's you, if right now you're feeling like your progress is slow and linear and you're not sure if you're ever going to get there, just consider that you might be right on time for that big growth. If you quit now, you'll never know.
