What Hiring Managers Actually Care About
Iāve been interviewing hiring managers and recruiters for my upcoming book on ML careers, and they keep bring up this one thing that matters more than anything else in who they want to hire.
Itās not skills, or degrees, or referrals, or even projects.
Itās āØ enthusiasm. āØ
What theyāre looking for throughout the hiring process is whether this person actually gives a shit. This comes across differently at each stage:
If you reach out on LinkedIn, did you bother to learn about the company and ask something relevant, or just say āreferral pleaseā?
Does your cover letter explain clearly why you, and why this job?
Are your projects unique? Did you build something you actually care about, or are you just following along with a project someone else designed?
When youāre interviewing, do you show up prepared? Did you actually research the role and the company? Can you tell a compelling story about why you want this job and why youād be great at it?
I find that often when weāre getting started we get so bogged down with the massive list of things we think we need to do to get a job, that we forget to have fun. We forget to follow our curiosity and lean into our passion. We approach learning and the job search like a checklist.
But this over-optimization can be a big mistake in a market where enthusiasm, creativity, and you just being you can be your biggest advantage.
So from a practical perspective, take some time out of your busy study schedule to dig into something thatās just interesting to you. Make a weekend project for fun, not to learn anything in particular. And take a few deep breaths before your next interview. The version of you that's actually into this stuff interviews better than the optimized version any day of the week.
